Hawaii Newspaper Indexes
The Hawaii and Pacific Section produces two indexes that cover four Hawaii newspapers: Hawaii Newspaper IndexThe Hawaii Newspaper Index covers articles from 1989 published in Hawaii's two former major daily newspapers, the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, as well as the current daily paper, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The Index does not contain the full-text of the newspaper articles - it contains citations to help find articles. Limited backfiles of full-text articles are available through the Honolulu Star-Advertiser's website, or through our own databases page. The Index is available online via the Internet on the Hawaii State Public Library System's website. From the homepage, select Books, Articles & Media, then click on the link to the Hawaii Newspaper Index. Each entry includes the following information about an article: title, subject(s), and source (newspaper title, date and page). Additional useful information from the article is often included. While not every article is indexed, most major articles dealing with Hawaii & Pacific-related issues are. Topics that are indexed include: business and economics, culture and arts, education, environment, government and politics, Hawaiiana, history, obituaries, personalities, recreation, science and technology, social issues, and travel. We strive to keep the Index timely and up to date. However, please be aware that the most recent articles may not have been indexed yet. Newspaper Index coverage for additional years is available in a printed book format. The print Index covers articles published 1929 to 1994 (overlaps the online Index 1989-1994). Copies of this Index are available at Hawaii State Library in the Hawaii & Pacific Section and the Serials Section. It is also available at most branch libraries. Copies of the Honolulu Advertiser from 1856 to present, and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin from 1893 to present, may be viewed on microfilm at Hawaii State Library, Serials Section. Some branch libraries also have microfilm copies of newspapers. Years of coverage vary. Please call your library to find the nearest location to view the newspapers you would like to see.
